Disaster management is the formation of plans through which communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and cope with calamities. Disaster management does not eliminate/block out the dangers but concentrates on making plans to diminish the impact of a disaster.

According to the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters; Annual Disaster Statistical Review 2014; in 2014, 324 triggered natural disasters were registered. It was the third lowest number of reported disasters in the last decade, below the annual average 384 disasters observed from 2004 to 2013. However, natural disasters still killed 7,823, a number largely below the annual average of 99,820 for years 2004-2013, and 140.8 million people became victims worldwide, also below the 2004-2013 annual average of 199.2 million. Like other indicators, economic damages from natural disasters estimated at US$ 99.2 billion in 2014, show a decrease to below their decennial average of US $ 162.5 billion.

The lower number of reported natural disasters in 2014 was mostly due to a smaller number of hydrological and climatological disasters (20.3% and 34.4% below their 2004-2013 annual average, respectively). Hydrological disasters at 153 still took by far the largest share in natural disaster occurrence in 2014 (47.2%), followed by meteorological disasters (118; 36.4%), geophysical disasters (32; 9.9%) and climatological disasters (21; 6.5%)

Africa suffered from 39 natural disasters in 2014, a number far below its 2004-2013 annual average (69) but its distribution of disasters frequency presents a similar profile to the one seen over the last decade. Hydrological disasters represented 61.5% of occurrence, followed by meteorological disasters (15.4%), climatological (12.8%) and geophysical disasters (10.3%). The number of victims (7.74million) was largely below the annual average during the period 2004-2013 (27.9 million), mainly due to the low number of victims of climatological disasters, the third lowest since 2004.

CINCO works towards providing immediate relief and assists in the rehabilitation process of the affected communities in the aftermath of a disaster. We build resilience of communities affected and the stakeholders in disaster management. Fundamental right to life with dignity is our priority. Women, Children, People with Disabilities and those living with HIV/AIDS as well as the Elderly are the most vulnerable during disasters and CINCO works to build capacities of the vulnerable cope with disasters and manage the causes of vulnerability so as to become less vulnerable to future disasters. We also integrate disaster risk reduction into our ongoing projects.

Disasters traumatize their victims for long periods of time. The loss of loved ones has deep impacts, especially on children who end up being left orphans with no parents to look after them. Displacement from one’s home, loss of property and disruption to business and social affairs can cause continuing stress. For some people the psychological impacts can be long lasting.

CINCO’s work in emergency is to help people respond, prepare, and recover from disasters so as to reduce risks and mitigate the impact of a disaster. We work with other organizations and governments to support those affected meet their immediate basic needs i.e. housing, food, water, Sanitation and hygiene.

Our volunteers work with community members in the distribution of relief items, offering health advisory and services uptake, and rebuilding of livelihoods and sanitary provisions. News of floods in Kenya has lately done nothing to reduce dry spell instigated malnutrition among children. Flooding is a pointer of poor soil infiltration coming about because of absence of vegetation and soil degradation. This implies much water is streaming off the soil and too little is seeping in. We will confront dry spell again before the onset of short rains towards the end of 2017.

What amount of cash does CINCO need to respond to the emergencies in Kenya?

CINCO is looking for $1 million to react to the flood emergency in Kenya. We expect to reach about 200,000 individuals with fundamental supplies to help mitigate the drought and now flood effects in the next 3 months, and give a booster to livelihoods, health, basic needs provision, building water, sanitation and hygiene frameworks as well as building community resilience.

CINCO wishes to note that In-kind donations are highly appreciated but would love to prefer cash donations instead. This is due to the following reasons:

  1. Due to trasportation time span, such In-kind donations may reach late at a time when needs may have changed.
  2. Cash donations give us the flexibility needed to meet our clients´ urgent and dynamic needs and this may also vary from one family to another.

How do we ensure the support given to us reach the intended communities?

In supporting flood and drought disasters mitigation, CINCO works with community organizations, stakeholders and the Governments in our projects rollout thus guaranteeing help gets to the population who require it most/ targeted during such crisis. CINCO is a strong grassroot organization with profound understanding of our target groups, community dynamics and cultural norms. We are thus at a good position to deliver on the same.
